It is 9:30PM, and I am sitting on a mattress which has a pillow. I do not hear a sewing machine working until the wee hours of the morning, nor do I hear kids crying. I do not hear that nasty rat that decided to move in when the rains began and began stealing my host family’s storage pile of rice which happened to be right outside of my room. Do not worry- I still hear dogs barking, chickens cock-a-doodling, and yes, I already saw a cockroach. Where is this otherwise seemingly wonderful place you might ask? A place called- my home. Let me say that again just to rejoice in how wonderful it sounds- MY HOME!
Muchachos- boys/men between the ages of 16 and 28 who are usually single and still enjoying not being tied down
Chakera- the purses the indigenious women make out of plant fibers, cotton, or sacks
I am learning to learn how to make one of their native chakeras thanks to this amazing women! I am finding it extremely difficult and time consuming, and probably will not finish until it is time for me to leave, but they are proud of me for attempting!
